Emmetten

Emmetten lies at an altitude of 774 metres high above the southern shore of the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) between Beckenried and Seelisberg. The small resort in Canton Nidwalden has been awarded the «Families Welcome» label of the Swiss Tourism Federation.
Emmetten is an ideal starting point for outdoor leisure activities in the Niederurnen, Stockhütte and Klewenalp region. Public transport makes this hiking and winter sports region readily accessible. Emmetten lies on the postbus route from Stans via Beckenried to Seelisberg, making it ideal for excursions in the area of the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne). The slip road to the Gotthard motorway is a mere five minutes away.

A popular and interesting round trip by boat, several cableways, on foot and post bus links the three sections of the Beckenried, Emmetten and Seelisberg region. Called the «Goldi Family Safari» , this can also be taken in winter with a toboggan.

SUMMER

Two cableways access the mountains around Emmetten: a new cableway runs to the mountain terminus Stockhütte (1279m), entrance to the hiking region as far as Klewenalp. A smaller cableway runs up to Niederbauen (1812m). With keen observation and a little luck, black grouse, chamois and ibex can be seen in their natural habitat along the fauna observation path that leads from Niederbauen above Emmetten via Stockhütte and Heitliberg to Klewenalp. Niederbauen is also a popular take-off point for paragliders.Emmetten lies on the Route of St. James; the municipality’s coat of arms depicts three white shells against a red background. The churches of St. Jakob (St. James) and St. Theresa can be found at the village centre.

WINTER

The Emmetten cableway, the Klewenalp cableway at Beckenried and several smaller lift installations transport winter sports lovers to the ski region. The Niederbauen area is also attractive for winter hiking and snowshoe trekking.

Highlights

  • Family Safari Klewenalp-Emmetten-Seelisberg – round trip popular with young and old, combining cableway, postbus and boat transport.
  • Flora observation path Emmetten – information panels along an 11km long trail. A guided dawn tour increases the chances of sighting deer, chamois, ibex, marmots and eagles.
