Urserntal-Weg

The winter hiking trail between Andermatt and Realp runs along the Reuss through the valley. It takes you past Hospental with its distinctive Tower of the Lords and then through the smallest village in Switzerland.
This winter hiking trail through the Ursern Valley starts in Andermatt and first runs along the young Reuss to the Marcht. From there you continue along the river and pass Hospental with its widely visible tower dating from the 13th century. It once served as a residential tower, but has not been inhabited since the 15th century.

After Hospental there are beautiful views far beyond the Ursern Valley once you are close to the Richleren barns, where you can also take a short break. It is also worth stopping in Zumdorf, officially declared to be the smallest village in Switzerland. The village, founded by Walsers, is a real little gem with its Baroque chapel, two barns, one residential and two holiday houses, as well as a traditional restaurant. This is run by the only family currently living in Zumdorf throughout the year. Up until 1851 this little village still had 50 inhabitants. But then it was buried under a huge avalanche and has never fully recovered from this disaster.

After Zumdorf, the trail leads along the banks of the Reuss and towards your destination at Realp. It passes the Mitschen tunnel and the biathlon training base. With a bit of luck you can even watch a national team in training. At the foot of the Furka you will see Realp and a little further back the station for the Furka Steam Railway. Now, in winter, you can hardly imagine how it snorts its way along in the summer. At the Realp railway station, you leave the winter hiking trail and come to the village. If you wish, you can take the train back to Andermatt.
