Winterwanderweg Fafleralp
Blatten–Kühmatt–Fafleralp–Blatten
An easy circular hike through the stunning beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site. The route follows the river Lonza, climbs to Kühmatt (a destination for pilgrims) and continues to Fafleralp settlement with views of the valley.
Blatten is the commune with the largest area in the Lötschental, and it is also the furthermost commune in the valley. Even further on, the hike takes you towards Fafleralp across a snow-bedecked winter landscape. On the first section, you hike uphill along the wild river Lonza (which rises on the Lang Glacier) until Kühmatt.
The baroque Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary has stood in this uninhabited spot since 1654. Kühmatt is a destination for pilgrimages in this region. At 1,633 m.a.s.l., this hamlet is one of the valley's most impressive "places of grace". The present-day chapel was built under the direction of Prior Bartholomew Indergassen (1646–1663). There are votive paintings inside. You can enjoy moments of tranquillity and contemplation here before continuing your hike through the UNESCO World Natural Heritage area of Jungfrau-Aletsch.
The route now snakes its way round several hairpin bends among chalets, across meadows and through forests. When you reach the Fafleralp settlement, you are already at your destination. There is a lovely view across the valley, with the awesome Bietschhorn peak on the other side. Charlie Chaplin was also an admirer: "There is nothing more beautiful than the Fafleralp", this loyal visitor wrote during the 1950s in the Hotel Fafleralp's guest book. And Fafleralp is still a world of its own today. This place of natural power in the high Alps exudes energy for the body and the spirit. Hike back along the same stretch to return to Blatten.
