Winterwanderweg Britanniahütte

Winter hiking in high mountain country amid the glacier world of Saas-Fee – that's the theme of this short route linking Felskinn mountain station and the Britannia Hut. The winter hiking trail is usually groomed from the end of February, when the Britannia Hut is open.
To reach the start of this tour, take the Alpin Express cable car from Saas-Fee up to Felskinn station, almost 3,000 meters above sea level. You are now at the start of this high-altitude Alpine winter hike amid the glacier world around Saas-Fee. But be careful: the air here is thin, so you should walk slowly. Another point: the route is only prepared when the Britannia Hut is open. Good weather is also essential for this tour.

From Felskinn mountain station, the route leads to the right on the northern slope of Hinter Allalin pass, heading eastwards. It climbs over the Chessjen Glacier at first, and then on to Egginerjoch col. You cross a high plateau and walk past ice-covered mountain lakelets. Above you on the right, you can already see the tour's destination: the Britannia Hut. You reach it after a short climb of about 150 meters. At the top, your reward is an all-round view of the glacier world, extending across the border into Italy.

Built in 1912 and last refurbished in 1997, the Britannia has sleeping accommodation for over 100 guests and is one of the most frequently visited huts of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It is the starting-point for many mountain tours in the region and is also the destination of the Haute Route, the famous multi-stage tour through the Alps that begins in Chamonix. From the Britannia Hut – whose name, incidentally, commemorates the mountaineering friendship between Britain and Switzerland – the trail follows the same route back to Felskinn station.
