Richinen-Gassen-Weg

If you’re not a big fan of walking uphill, the winter hiking trail from the Richinen ski lift mountain station down to Gassen is the perfect route for you. The entire route is downhill and offers fantastic views of the Fiesertal and Rhône valleys.
The tour begins with a trip on the ski lift from the valley station to Bellwald-Richinen mountain station, with spectacular views on the way up. At the top, you’ll have a wonderful view of the Rhône Valley and the peaks of the Binntal Landscape Park on the other side of the valley. The trail begins right next to the chairlift and neighbouring restaurant with panoramic sun terrace – and it’s downhill all the way.

The route mostly heads to the west of the ski lift, passing through open terrain and the peaceful larch forest. As the path winds its way downhill, hikers can enjoy the ever-changing views around them: to the west, the Fieschertal Valley, and to the north, the majestic peaks of the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site, protecting the region that is home to most of the Alps’ glaciers. The most westerly point of the hike, Mutti, is a great place to simply relax in the surrounding nature and enjoy the sun.

At Mutti, the trail changes direction and the path flattens out back to the valley station. Once you’ve passed underneath the cable car and have walked to the end of it, you’ll find yourself in Bellwald. For a more challenging hike, you can do the trail in reverse or walk both uphill and downhill. It’s also worth visiting the highest village in Goms – Bellwald is one of the oldest and best-maintained villages in Valais. With its narrow alleyways and sun-darkened wooden houses, its charm will win you over. Particularly impressive is the parish church, listed as a historic monument, together with the ossuary, located at the southern edge of the village centre.
