Sedrun–Disentis
This popular winter hike on the sunny side of the valley follows the railway line until Disentis. Impressive sights along the way include a view of the village below and the three peaks of the Piz Muraun, Piz Cazirauns and Piz Caschleglia in the distance.
From Sedrun railway station, the path first runs along quiet side streets before leading to Bugnei over an impressive railway viaduct 120 metres long, which spans the narrow valley with nine arches. The bridge was commissioned in 1926 by the Furka-Oberalp Railway. On the way to Mompé Tujetsch, there are plenty of benches where hikers can bask in the sunshine and enjoy the view of the mountains: the Piz Muraun, Piz Cazirauns and Piz Caschleglia form a distinctive trio, visible from afar and reminiscent of the Bernese Oberland.
In Mompé Tujetsch, the view widens to encompass the Surselva region and Disentis with its impressive monastery. The village of Segnas with its lovingly restored Walser houses is just a short, gentle descent away.
After Cuoz and Acla da Fontauna, the hike ends at Disentis railway station where the train runs back to Sedrun. Tip: hikers can opt for a shorter route as there are four stops on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway between Sedrun and Disentis. Those who are more athletic can take the hike in the opposite direction.
