Binn
Binn is situated in an unspoilt, romantic branch valley of the Goms in Upper Valais. The Binntal is a nature paradise and famous for its wealth of minerals and rock crystals. There are many hiking trails in this pretty and remote valley.
The Binntal (Binn Valley) has been famous for its minerals and rock crystals since the 18th century. Many first discoveries of mineral types have been made here. Hikers can observe a rich diversity of flora and fauna and often find colourful and glittering pieces of rock crystal along their trail. Information panels along the geology theme path from Imfeld to the Lengenbach mineral quarry introduce passers-by to the characteristic Binntal rock crystals. The mineral quarry is popular with families with children, who enjoy looking for «fool’s gold»; gold-coloured speckled pyrite often found in crystalline shapes.
The valley and the village of Binn at an altitude of 1400 metres have only been accessible year-round since the 1965 construction of the road tunnel. The only large hotel in the valley is the carefully restored Hotel Ofenhorn in Binn. It was built in 1883 as a mountain hotel in the style of belle époque, and its first guests were predominantly British, including the later prime minister Winston Churchill.
SUMMER
The village of Binn with its dark brown timber houses is the starting point of several hikes. 150 kilometres of signposted trails criss-cross the valley and lead to mountain lakes. The Eggerhorn is the valley’s home mountain and vantage point, with a splendid panoramic view from the summit. Mule trekking is an unusual and interesting way to discover the mountain landscape. The old pack mule trail leading from Upper Valais through the Binntal to Italy via the Albrun Pass (2400m) was an important trading route until the construction of the road over the Simplon Pass. Vestiges of several sections of the original trail are still visible. In an endeavour to conserve and protect the landscape to an even greater degree, the municipalities of Binn, Ernen and Grengiols have launched the Binntal nature park project.
WINTER
The Binntal has a well-maintained winter-walking trail and is ideal for snowshoe treks. The small ski lift is popular with families. A somewhat larger ski region can be found at Ernen, on the southern flank of the Goms just in front of the entrance to the Binntal.
