Unterwasser is the starting point of this route. It leads you leisurely through Toggenburg territory and along the riverbank through the enchanting Thurtal Valley to Starkenbach. An exceptionally picturesque route for true lovers of untouched nature.
Accompanied by the gently lapping Thur you can wander from village to village. The route leads from Unterwasser via Alt St. Johann to Starkenbach. The tranquil villages blend perfectly into their surroundings thanks to their period architecture. Some of the pretty timber houses have attached rustic water wheels that you can stop and admire.

Between the villages you are surrounded by lush, green meadows and vivid fields that seem to never end. You will really feel you are on holiday amidst this peaceful and romantic landscape. The majestic Toggenburg peaks on the horizon serve to additionally accentuate the captivating scenery.

The river bank is carpeted with a large variety of wild plants. Now and then, you catch a glimpse of a farmhouse on the gently rolling hills and several breath-taking views over this peaceful region, until you finally reach Starkenbach. This is a very worthwhile route that promises relaxation and tranquillity.

S-Bahn (S9) trains, which allow independent boarding and alighting, operate from the support railway station at Wil to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann station, from where you can take the low-floor post bus (Route 790) to the Unterwasser, Post stop. You can also travel to Unterwasser, Post on the low-floor post bus (Route 790) from the support railway station at Buchs SG. Around 48hrs advance notice is required for the post bus (+41 (0)71 375 68 80).
Wheelchair-suitable parking spaces
There are three parking spaces suitable for wheelchair users at the bottom station of the Iltiosbahn funicular.

Follow the cantonal road eastwards in Unterwasser and reach the tennis hall after around 150m. On the southern side of the tennis hall, next to the accessible play area, is the entrance to the wheelchair-accessible public toilet. WC info: door width 80cm; movement area (DxB) 125x140cm; seat height 48cm; hand grips, left fixed, right moveable; access right; mirror height 100cm; washbasin underside clearance 70cm.

The entire route is surfaced and mostly level. At km0.9 you meet a 10m uphill section with a 6.5% gradient and at km4.6 an uphill section of around 100m length, also with a 6.5% gradient. There is a gate each at km1.1 and km1.5. Both are closed during the grazing season. They are fitted with a special mechanism that should enable unaccompanied persons to open and close them independently.

The low-floor post bus (Route 790) operates from Starkenbach to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann railway station or the support station at Buchs SG. Around 48h advance notice is required (+41 (0)71 375 68 80). The S-Bahn (S9), which allows independent boarding and alighting, runs from Nesslau-Neu St. Johann to the support railway station Wil.
