Neckertaler Höhenweg

Neckertaler Höhenweg

The Neckertal valley connects the Toggenburg and Appenzell regions and is situated at the foot of Säntis mountain. The route takes hikers to the region's most beautiful vantage points. A range of natural and cultural sights can be admired along the way.
The trail leads from the village of Mogelsberg up to Wilkethöchi with its impressive panoramic view that stretches from the Vorarlberg to the Bernese Alps. Dicken, a town that used to be renowned for its embroidery, lies near the way, after which the trail takes hikers up to the ridge that forms part of the famous pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. It then descends to Wald-Schönengrund, a border village between the cantons of St Gallen and Appenzell.

The reward for negotiating the ascent up Hochhamm mountain and the path across pastures up to the Hochalp is the 360° panoramic view of the mighty Säntis massif and far across Lake Constance. The Appenzell alpine trail then continues towards Schwägalp, offering stunning views of the Appenzell hinterland as well as Obertoggenburg.

After passing through the Schwägalp nature adventure park and the Kreisalpen forest nature reserve, hikers follow the trail up Hinterfallenchopf, which opens the view to the Churfirsten range. After traversing the sprawling Chlosteralpen, they continue to Gössingenhöchi and Bendel. The last leg of the hike crosses the Chellenmoor to Rigelschwendi and finally descends to the village of Hemberg, where the trail ends.
