Schneeschuhtrail Maria-Rickenbach
Niederrickenbach Dorf–Ahorn–Hermisegg–Niederrickenbach Dorf
This moderately challenging snowshoe trail surrounded by pristine nature offers stunning views into the Engelberg Valley, away from the hustle and bustle. It leads from the Maria-Rickenbach pilgrimage site with its famous monastery mainly through the forest and across meadows.
The aerial cableway takes you from Dallenwil to the start of the trail at Niederrickenbach, also known as Maria-Rickenbach. The hamlet is beautifully situated on a hillside. With its Maria-Rickenbach Benedictine monastery, it used to be a popular destination for pilgrims. Until 1986, the nuns ran an institute requiring that ten places were made available for needy children from the Canton of Nidwalden every year. Children from Niederrickenbach were also attending classes here. To this day, a few nuns live in the monastery, selling tea, ointments and other products at its shop.
The snowshoe trail, which starts at the mountain station, is ideal for experienced winter sports enthusiasts. It leads mainly through the forest and across meadows. You first walk along the monastery's walls through the mountain village. The route then climbs steadily in several switchbacks, passing the Steinrüti farm, a log hut with a barbecue pit and a compost toilet. After a short while, the path enters the forest and continues toward Ahorn.
At Bachboden, the route crosses the Buoholzbach brook for the first time. You then turn around and continue uphill across the Hermisegg. Next comes a steep section down to the bridge and again across the brook. After reaching the Ahorn fork, continue on the ascending route. The trail leads via Steinrüti back to Maria-Rickenbach.
