Ober-Altberg-Schneeschuhtrail

On the sun terrace above Illgau, not far from the cantonal capital of Schwyz, lies a charming landscape of gently rolling hills. The special tranquillity of this area makes it very popular with snowshoe hikers and nature lovers.
After an ascent on the Illgau-Ried and Illgau-St. Karl cable cars, visitors will find an unspoilt winter landscape far from traffic, noise and the bustle of winter sports. Here, above the small village of Illgau with its 790 inhabitants, is where the circular tour begins.

The beauty of the landscape is matched by the ease of the ascent via Federenberg to the highest point, the Sternenegg. With no more altitude to overcome, the view of Muotathal, the Uri mountains, Lake Lucerne and the Mythen is particularly enjoyable.

Like the ascent, the return to the starting point alternates between open terrain and forest sections as the trail runs past cosy Alpine huts. The descent via Ober Altberg und Oberberg is also gentle thanks to the nature of the landscape. Now the hike is over, it's time to take one last deep breath before riding the nostalgic-looking cable cars back down into the valley.
