Stäfeli Trail

Get away from it all: this trail runs from the well-preserved Walser settlement of Weissenberge to the idyllic Stäfeli ski hut, where a spectacular panoramic view over the Sernf Valley awaits.
After a short cable car journey, snowshoe hikers can enjoy a majestic Alpine backdrop and an idyllic winter landscape high above the mountain village of Matt. The snowshoe trail branches off to the left after a short section along the Weissenbergstrasse, passing over gentle slopes via Alp Schiben to the Ängisboden.

The route continues through short forest sections and across open meadows towards Ochsenbüel and the highest point on the hike, the Stäfeli ski hut. As a reward for the climb, the hut on Alp Fittern affords a unique view over the Sernf Valley and the Glarus Alps on the opposite side, including the Gandstock, Hohberg and Charenstock.

The descent leads to the Chegelboden over pleasantly gradual slopes and back to the old Walser settlement, where there are two cosy mountain restaurants with a panoramic view. Weissenberge is known as the sunniest place in the canton inhabited throughout the year. About 25 people live permanently on this terrace on the southern slope of the Gulderstock, approximately 500 metres above the village of Matt.
