Alp Biel, on the sunny terrace above the Schächental valley, is the starting point to the history-laden Chinzig-Pass. The Biel-Chinzig area with its magnificent mountain backcloth is a favourite for excursions in both summer and winter.
It takes just 15 minutes to reach Alp Biel from Bürglen. It lies on a sunny south-facing slope of the Schächental valley below the Chinzig-Pass. From here, visitors enjoy views of Canton Uri's mountain world of, extending from the Clariden to the Uri-Rotstock. The Wissenboden above the alp is home to the legend of the Sennentunscheli. A herdsman and his labourer had made a doll from scraps of material. This doll, the Sennentunscheli, came to life and carried out all the hard work on the alp for the men. But finally it demanded a very high price.

Summer

During summer, many hiking, biking and climbing options are on offer around Biel. The scenic Schächentaler Höhenweg trail to the Klausenpass is particularly popular. The hike to Chinzig-Pass is not only interesting for the chapel at the pass head (2073 m altitude). Russian General Suvorov led his army of 22,000 men across the pass during his battle against Napoleon. Ideal thermal conditions for Alpine model glider flying prevail in Biel. Expert model flyers show off their skills here at the Alpine Glider Week. The Model Glider and Motorised Flight School is open to those who would like to try their hand at this aerial art.

Winter

In winter, snowsport fans make their way up to the easily manageable Biel-Chinzig ski area. Here, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy wonderful days on the pistes, often in sunshine with views over the sea of fog. In addition, peaceful winter-walking and snowshoe trekking trails lead through the snow-covered mountain landscape above the Schächental valley.
