Juf

Juf lies in a barren mountain world at the foot of the Septimerpass close to heaven at 2126 metres. It ranks as Europe's highest-altitude settlement inhabited throughout the year.
Juf belongs to the municipality of Avers and lies in the high valley of the same name at a record-breaking altitude of 2126 metres. Up here, about 30 people brave the frosty temperatures of the long winter, most of them mountain farmers.

Visitors are greeted by the tinkle of cow bells and whistles of marmots. A cosy guesthouse welcomes all who wish to stay that little bit longer enjoying the unusual atmosphere in the tranquil mountain village at the end of the road. Juf is ideal for extended mountain hikes and days of quiet away from all hustle and bustle. Marmots are best discovered on the signposted and worldwide unique nature trail. Chamois and ibex also live in the cliffs above the settlement and with luck you may also spot an eagle. In winter, Juf is the starting point for a host of ski tours.

Highlights

  • Record height: Juf is Europe’s highest-altitude settlement inhabited throughout the year.
  • Marmot nature trail: 11 information points and live observation in Val Bergalga (from Avers-Juppa).
