Col du Marchairuz
A park-like landscape with colourful flower meadows and extensive woodland areas as well as splendid views of Lac Léman und and the Savoyan Alps: the impressive Col du Marchairuz.
The Col du Marchairuz is a Jura pass in Canton Vaud, linking Aubonne close to Lac Léman via Bière or St. George with Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux. The pass summit, altitude 1447m, is in the middle of the Parc jurassien vaudois (regional park).
To the north east of the Col du Marchairuz is Mont Tendre, at 1679 m the highest summit in the Swiss Jura and a popular hiking destination. The hike from the Col du Marchairuz to the summit leads up through a park-like landscape. The reward is a fantastic panorama stretching from the Savoyan to the Bernese Alps, from the Vosges to La Dôle. The nearby Chalet du Mont Tendre is an inviting mountain restaurant with equally as impressive views. There are other routes up Mont Tendre, e.g. from Le Pont am de Joux, whereby the height difference is considerably greater. This ascent is part of the long-distance hike on the Jura-Höhenweg.
The Col du Marchairuz, where a homely hotel/restaurant waits to welcome guests, is the starting point of several theme trails in the Parc jurassien vaudois: 9 km circular trails on geology and botany start and end at the hotel and take approx. 3.5 to 4 hours. The Weg der Jurablumen (Jura Flower Trail) is best in early summer when the meadows are carpeted in colour.
The Parc jurassien vaudois is an around 100 km2 regional park in the Canton Vaud Jura on the wide high ridge in the foremost Jura chain, between the pass roads of the Col de la Givrine in the south west and Col du Mollendruz in the north east. The park is characterised by extensive forests and Jura meadows. A park information centre at St. George on the road from Aubonne to the Col du Marchairuz gives details of all attractions and places of interest.
