Stansstad

Stansstad in Canton Nidwalden lies at an altitude of 435 metres on the strait dividing Lake Lucerne from the Alpnachersee. The famous Bürgenstock hotels high over the lakeside lie partly on Stansstad territory.
This strait dividing the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) and the Alpnachersee is traversed by main road, the A2 motorway and the Engelberg line of the Zentralbahn. Until the opening of the railway line in 1964, boat passengers disembarked here to take the train to Engelberg.

The mediaeval tower «Schnitzturm» is Stansstad’s landmark. It isn’t clear when this part of an expansive lake shore fortress was built. The «Sustgebäude» building has also survived. The lido is an integral feature of Stansstad, offering facilities such as lake bathing, heated outdoor pool, water slide, wave machine, sunbathing lawn and beach volleyball.

The hamlet of Kehrsiten on the north-western slope of the Bürgenstock, the Obbürgen high valley and the terrace hamlet of Fürigen also belong to the municipality of Stansstad. A former fortress of the Swiss military dating from 1942 can be visited on the Kehrsitenstrasse at Fürigen. The fortress’ purpose was to defend the Stansstad strait.

The luxurious Bürgenstock hotels, accessible from Kehrsiten by funicular, are partly on communal terrain. There is a well-known 2.6km-long rock footpath constructed around 1900 that leads from the Bürgenstock to the Hammetschwand lift or elevator, the highest outdoor elevator in Europe. Another hotel standing amidst beautiful scenery with another (former) funicular is the Hotel Fürigen at the hamlet of Fürigen, 200 metres above the Vierwaldstättersee. The hotel’s own funicular that climbed the steep slope from lake shore to hotel is preserved but no longer in use.

Highlights

  • Lido – scenic lido with lake access, heated pool, slides and other facilities.
  • Bürgenstock – the luxurious Bürgenstock Hotels lie on the boundary of Stansstad municipality high above the lake.
  • Fürigen fortress – the preserved artillery defence that was abandoned in 1987 can be visited at weekends throughout the summer.
  • Zentralbahn – Stansstad is a station on the Zentral Railways’ narrow-gauge line running from Lucerne to Engelberg.
  • Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) – the boat pier at Stansstad is a station on the route to Alpnachstad. The steamship retracts its chimney to pass beneath the Achereggbrücke bridge.
