The Stanserhorn experience begins at the nostalgic lower terminus, from which an over 100-year-old funicular climbs past lush meadows and traditional wooden houses to the Kälti middle station. Instead of purchasing new rolling stock, the operating company has carefully restored the original wooden carriages. Modernity reigns after the middle station: a cableway transports passengers up to the Stanserhorn Kulm.

The majestic view encompassing 100 kilometres of Alpine peaks and ten Swiss lakes amply justify the Stanserhorn’s five star logo. An extra star is reserved for the rotating restaurant «Rondorama», which turns full circle every 43 minutes. The Stanserhorn cableway and restaurant are closed during the winter season from November until the end of March.

The Stanserhorn has hikes of various lengths from a half-hour stroll around the peak to hikes of a day’s length. There are trails down to the valley from three sides; to the north over mountain meadows and through cool forests to Stans, to the southeast to the summer bob run at Wirzweli and to the southwest over the Ächerlipass into Canton Obwalden and Kerns, St. Niklausen or Flüeli-Ranft. The Stanserhorn also has launching spots for hang gliders and paragliders. A mountain bike route starting at Stans and traversing the Ächerlipass does not lead directly to the peak, but round the mountain.

Stans has a pretty square bordered by several baroque buildings that were constructed after the large fire of 1713. The St. Peter and Paul Church, built between 1641 and 1647 with its older Roman bell tower is well worth visiting. The Winkelried Monument is dedicated to local hero Arnold von Winkelried, who sacrificed himself at the Battle of Sempach in 1386 to secure victory for the Swiss Confederates. The Winkelriedhaus is home to Canton Nidwalden’s culture and heritage museum. Icons of Swiss saint Niklaus von Flüe (Nicholas of Flüe) can be seen at the former Capuchin church. The largest Swiss aeroplane manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft has its headquarters and production halls at Stans.
