Sennwald

Sennwald in the St. Gallen Rheintal borders directly on to the Principality of Liechtenstein. The mountain panorama with the Chrüzbergen, Stauberen and Hohem Kasten peaks is in powerful contrast to the extensive Rhine plains.
Lovers of outdoor exercise appreciate the woodlands and wetlands along the Rhine for walking, jogging and cycling. Skaters prefer the Rhine embankment and bikers take to the signposted Werdenberg bike trails. Hikers can take wonderful trails into the Alpstein area. The views from the Stauberen are absolutely sensational and the ridge hike from the top station of the Stauberen aerial cableway to the summit of the Hohen Kasten is both spectacular and signposted as a geological hiking trail. In addition, the Sagenrundweg (fables round trail) begins at Sennwald and in part follows the Rheintaler Höhenweg (high-level trail).

No other dynasty was able to survive so long in the Alpenrheintal as the Barons of Sax – proven to have been about 500 years. In around 1200, they settled in the then newly-built Hohensax Castle. Today’s ruin lies on the well-known Rheintaler Höhenweg (high-level trail) and is a favourite spot for excursions. A second large Sax castle complex, the Forstegg Castle at Salez, is now run as the Landgasthof Schlössli guesthouse.

The last prominent Saxer figure was Baron Johann Philipp. In 1596, two years after he had taken up residence at Forstegg, he was murdered in a dispute over inheritance. His perfect mummified remains can still be seen in the Sennwald Church.

Three waterwheels again operate the large hammers, transmission and a large grindstone of the historic hammer mill built in 1860, which is open to group visits.

Highlights

  • Hiking Stauberen - Hoher Kasten – the spectacular ridge hike is well made, but not for the weak-kneed.
  • Rheintaler Höhenweg - along 105 km, the high-level trail links the Bodensee via the Rhine Valley, Upper Toggenburg and Werdenberg with the Sarganser Region.
  • The Sennwald mummy – the well-preserved remains of Baron Johann Philipp, murdered in 1596, may be viewed in groups by prior arrangement.
