Oberrickenbach
Canton Nidwalden has several cableways and smaller lift installations. Oberrickenbach is at the lower end of the Engelberg Valley and has two cableways accessing Bannalp and its reservoir, an area of natural beauty that is off the beaten track.
Oberrickenbach belongs to the municipality of Wolfenschiessen and lies on the eastern slope of the Engelbergertal (Engelberg Valley) at an altitude of 894 metres. Several small lifts, many operating on a cantonal concession, ensure access to the remote mountain pastures and alpine grazing or are used in the production and transport of hydroelectricity.
Many of these lifts are used for tourism, such as transporting hikers and climbers and bringing paragliders to their launching spots. Oberrickenbach and Wolfenschiessen have several lift installations ascending slopes on both sides of the valley, to Haldigrat and Bannalp (around 1700m altitude). The small cableway to the Bannalpsee with its breathtaking drop away from the vertical rock face is a particularly thrilling experience.
172 kilometres of hiking trails access the Wolfenschiessen municipality and outlying areas. Oberrickenbach and the higher situated Bannalp with its reservoir are the starting points for mountain walks and hikes, for instance over the Haldigrat to Niederrickenbach and its Benedictine monastery or the «Walenpfad» trail to the scenic viewpoint of Waldegg, which continues to Engelberg-Brunni.
A round trail leads to the idyllic reservoir Bannalpsee, with a one-hour dwarf theme path for small children. There are barbecue pits with firewood at the delta where the mountain stream joins the lake. Mountain inns offer food and lodging. Bannalp is a family-friendly ski region in winter, with two ski lifts, a sign-posted snowshoe trail and many ski touring opportunities.
