Those who travel up the Toggenburg and leave the narrow part of the valley behind will be surprised to see a beautiful landscape opening before them: the valley plain spreading out at the entrance to Upper Toggenburg with Nesslau and Krummenau.
A part of Europe's highest conglomerate-rock mountain, the Speers (1950 m) and Alpstein belong to the Nesslau-Krummenau Municipality. The Churfirsten peaks are also a striking sight. Coming from Wattwil, the Südostbahn (Southeast Railway) travels to Krummenau and Nesslau-Neu St. Johann (terminal station). Postbuses travel from here into Upper Toggenburg. The pass road to Schwägalp and the Appenzell Region branches off in Neu St. Johann. The bottom station of the Wolzenalp aerial cableway serving the hiking and skiing area of the same name is near the village of Krummenau.
In 1626 the St. Johann Benedictine Monastery, a priory of the Imperial Abbey since 1555, was transferred to Sidwald following a fire, and became known as Neu (new) St. Johann (to distinguish it from its earlier location at Alt (old) St. Johann). The new building is an important link between late-gothic and early-baroque architecture.
The former monastery church, with its herb garden in Alt St. Johann is worth a visit. The bone crusher and Werner Anderegg’s astronomical clocks in Nesslau are also worthy of mention. .
Summer
Nesslau-Krummenau is a hiking area with over 100 km of trails. Hikers will find a romantic Thurweg path alongside the river on the Nesslau - Stein - Alt St. Johann section (over 3 hours). Other suggested hikes in the region are the several-day Toggenburger Höhenweg (high-level trail) or mountain tours in the Silberplatten area near the Säntis. A barefoot tour on the educational trail around the Rietbach upland moor with its rare plants is balm for body and soul. The hilly topography also attracts mountain bikers, with a choice of 18 signposted routes between 13 and 44 km in length. Mountain lakes (Gräppelensee, Schönenbodensee, Schwendiseen) offer an invitation to swim.

The local ski runs at Wolzenalp offer plenty of fun for winter guests and more transport facilities at nearby Unterwasser-Alt St. Johann take snow sport fans to the heights. Alternatives are cross-country skiing runs at Rietbad or the sledge run at Schneit. The Churfirsten and Alpstein region offers attractive ski tours and the Schwägalp area is ideal for snowshoe trekking. The Thurweg between Krummenau and Nesslau and the Lutenwil-Schloh-Stein trail are prepared for winter walkers.
