Filzbach

Filzbach lies on a terrace with scenic views, about 300 m above the Walensee lake. Today, the village in the oldest spa region in Canton Glarus is the starting point for a variety of leisure activities on Kerenzerberg.
The new Walensee road, opened in 1964, freed Filzbach from through traffic and increased the region's touristic value. Almost at the same time, the construction of the first chairlift from Filzbach provided a starting point for excursions on the attractive high plateau of the Kerenzerberg. Today, the tiny village of 530 inhabitants has a sports centre, a seminar and experience hotel and as a health and leisure centre. There is still a greenbelt with continual stretches of cultivated farmland between the old village centre and the new developments. Filzbach affords wonderful views of the deep-blue Walensee lake and the surrounding mountain world.

Summer

In summer, the Filzbach chairlift provides access to attractive hiking and mountain biking routes. Hikes along a theme trail on geology and on making the famous Schabziger cheese, combine highlights on information and culinary delights. The range of leisure attractions includes a summer roller-sledge run with 24 sharp bends, a racy scooter-bike ride, an adventure rope park and a bike park with a 1.3km freeride section.

Winter

In winter you have the choice of the family-friendly sledge run and wild airboard pistes. Skiers can get their kicks in the adjacent Schilt ski area. A special natural phenomenon can be seen twice yearly in the neighbouring municipality of Obstalden, two kilometres east of Filzbach: the sun shines down on the village through the Mürtschenloch, a natural opening in the rock face high up on Mürtschenstock mountain.

Highlights

  • Leisure-time paradise Kerenzerberg: a wide range of adrenaline-pumping-activities for all ages.
  • Mürtschenloch: natural phenomenon and a magnet for amateur photographers. From 18-21 November and 21-24 January, the sun's rays light up Obstalden through the opening in the rock face.
  • Schabziger Höhenweg (high-level trail): theme trail with culinary stops.
