Sangernboden
The little wedding church on a rise is the landmark of the secluded village of Sangernboden in the Sense Oberland. Alpine cheese is produced on the alp above nearby Muscherenschlund and sold by direct marketing.
Sangernboden, a village in the municipality of Guggisberg, Canton Bern, lies in the Sense Oberland in the Gantrisch Region, close to the border with the Schwarzsee area of Canton Fribourg. The pass road from Zollhaus (branch-off to Schwarzsee) leads via Sangernboden and Schwefelbergbad to Gurnigel, the region’s main tourist attraction. Narrow side roads also link Sangernboden with nearby Ottenleuebad (skilifts, attractive cross-country skiing centre) and with the main town of Guggisberg (Guggershörnli, Vreneli-Museum). The Gantrisch region, with its varied undulating landscape is popular with ambitious bikers – and certainly with hikers.
The inhabitants of the small, secluded village of Sangernboden on the Kalten Sense river once had to bury their dead in Guggisberg, involving a long and arduous journey. So in 1931, they built the pretty mountain church with impressive stained-glass windows in an elevated position. Today the church is very popular for weddings.
Muscherenschlund with its Gantrischli Alpine dairy stretches southwards from Sangernboden. The alps belong to Fribourg and between 90 and 100 cows are grazed here in summer. The milk from the alps is processed into several types of cheese and successfully marketed by the producers themselves. A stop at the Gantrischli Alpine dairy is always well worthwhile.
