Heiden
Heiden sits on a sunny terrace high above the Bodensee and because of its classic village centre is known as the «Biedermeier Village». Many hotels and spa hotels have specialized in alternative medical care, which is widespread in the region.
In 1838, a disastrous fire fanned by a strong föhn wind destroyed 129 buildings in Heiden including the church. Within two years, the village had been rebuilt in a geometric, classic Biedermeier style. Thus today, Heiden is often called the Biedermeier village.
From the mid-19th century, together with many other places in the Appenzell region, Heiden developed into a whey-cure health resort. Thanks to two medical specialists, even becoming one of Europe’s major whey-cure resorts. Heiden Hospital was established In 1874. Henri Dunant, founder of the Red Cross, spent the last 23 years of his life here and a museum is dedicated to him. With many health-treatment offers and health-related hotels, Heiden has retained its status as a health resort. A health path on an identical theme provides information on medicinal herbs.
A well-known attraction is the Witzwanderweg (joke path) to Walzenhausen, devoted to the dry Appenzell humour. A varied round tour makes a continuation of the Witzweg: a romantic mountain railway from Walzenhausen down to Rheineck, then by boat (in summer) through the «Alten Rhein» nature reserve to Rorschach and with the Rorschach-Heiden cogwheel railway back up to Heiden.
The Heiden ski lift, children’s ski lift at Bischofsberg, cross-country ski runs at Langmoos and the sledge run at Scheidweg provide a small winter-sport programme.
