This mountain municipality covers an area of 51 square kilometres, consisting of an expansive forest and Alpine area on the southern slope of the Hohgant, source of the River Emme. Below ground you can find the Siebenhengste-Hohgant Cave. The village of Habkern is centred around the church built in 1666, which is in turn surrounded by old houses and barns. A village museum displays objects of local history and traditions. The Luegibodenblock, Switzerland’s largest erratic granite boulder, stands nearby. It is described as a place of power - a place with positive energy flow.

The Augstmatthorn (2137m) is Habkern’s home mountain. Together with the Harder Kulm and the Brienzer Rothorn it forms the long Brienzergrat or Brienz Ridge, which separates the high valley of Habkern and Lake Brienz. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first ibex colony in Canton Bern was reintroduced on the Augstmatthorn. Summer and autumn months offer the best opportunities to catch sight of these beautiful and elusive creatures.

The Augstmatthorn has excellent views of the three peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as well as Lake Brienz. To the north you can see Habkern village and the Hohgant. Its peak can be hiked to from the Harder Kulm or Brienzer Rothorn. Alternatively, it can be reached by starting at the Lombachalp, an area of natural beauty above Habkern. Habkern is a part of the varied cultural and natural landscape Thunersee-Hohgant: rolling hills, impressive gorges in Flysch and Nagelfluh, rugged limestone rock, karst formations, caves and marshland dominate this landscape that is a designated nature conservation area. It is a habitat for eagles, deer, lynx and wood grouse.

Lombachalp is a small winter ski region with downhill piste accessible by tow lift and infrastructure for cross-country skiing, snowshoe trekking and winter walking. A shuttle bus connects Habkern village with the Lombach high valley.
