Tschierv

Tschierv, the uppermost valley community in the Val Müstair/Münstertal, southeast of the Ofenpass and bordering on to the Swiss National Park. Hiking and wildlife watching in an intact natural world are the main objectives in this valley, which is influenced by South Tyrol.
The Aintasom-Tschierv (1693 m), Plaz (1660 m) and Orasom-Tschierv (1643 m) parts of the village lie on the Ofenpass road. The oldest part of the village, Chasuras (1691 m), lies across on the south-facing slope. Part of Tschierv - the Alp Buffalora with the Buffalora customs post – to the west of the pass is virtually uninhabited but very popular with hikers. Also belonging to Tschierv is the Val Nüglia, part of the National Park.

House styles in Tschierv have been influenced by both Engadine and nearby South Tyrol. The houses in the Chasuras, Plaz and Süsom Tschierv parts of the village are worth seeing as is the 15th-century Tschierv church with its restored organ, built for the S-chanf church and moved to Tschierv in 1904. The Carolingian monastery church in Müstair (UNESCO World Heritage) and the museum in Valchava are more inducements to make an excursion into the valley.

SUMMER

the village lives up to its neo-Latin name of «Tschierv» (deer): wildlife can be seen here regularly. The valley, adjacent National Park and southern Ortler area have over 250 km of marked hiking trails. An easy Münstertal high-level hike is the «Senda Val Münstair» from the top of the Ofenpass to Müstair, through Swiss stone pine forests, past alp huts and across mountain and flower-filled meadows with wonderful views of the valley and surrounding mountain world and the Ortler massif towering in the background.

WINTER

Tschierv lies at the end of the downhill run of the Minschuns ski region (up to 2700 m) with three skilifts, panorama restaurant and Swiss ski school. A sports bus takes guests from the entire valley to the valley station. Cross-country skiers will find 40 km of prepared runs. The array of winter attractions is rounded off by ski tours, winter-walking paths, an illuminated natural ice rink and the sledge run from Lü to Tschierv, which is also illuminated.

Highlights

  • St. Johann Monastery in Müstair – in no other place have 8th century frescoes been as extensively preserved as in this UNESCO World Heritage.
  • Swiss National Park – largest nature reserve in Switzerland with a unique wealth of Alpine fauna and flora in an unspoilt mountain landscape.
