Museum of the Gruyère Region
The museum retraces the history, art and traditions of Gruyères. On display in its permanent exhibition is an extensive collection of local folk art, such as poyas, cowbells and traditional Gruyères cream spoons.
The museum’s permanent exhibition offers a fascinating snapshot of the rich culture and history of Gruyères. Items on display include the reconstructed interiors of a traditional alpine farmers’ chalet and a cheese dairy.
The museum is renowned for its collection of poyas (farmers’ paintings of the summer ascent of their cattle to the mountain pastures), cow bells, wedding armoires, religious paraphernalia and photographs. Traditional costumes, butter moulds and wood-carved cream spoons bear witness to the prosperity which the famous Gruyère AOC cheese brought to the region.
Every Thursday of July and August, the folk market takes place in the centre of Bulle. A good opportunity to do one's shopping while admiring local handicrafts and sampling the delicious regional produce.
