Biosfera Val Müstair

The Park is an idyllic region featuring green pastures and idyllic villages offering a strong contrast with the wilderness of the nearby Swiss National Park. Since 2010, the Park, together with the Swiss National Park and the municipality of Scuol, form the UNESCO-Biosfera Engiadina Val Müstair.
Val Müstair forms a buffer area between the Swiss National Park – its Unesco biosphere reserve partner – and the Italian «Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio« National Park.

This region is home to one of the highest biodiversity in Switzerland as its mild climate and poor rainfall favour special animal and plant species. It has intact and diverse landscapes with huge forests in the north and a river, the Rombach, which is amongst the last ones allowed to run free in a high Swiss valley. Furthermore, 80% of Val Müstair farms are organic.

Handicraft, pure power energy, forestry and tourism are all part of the region's diverse economy. Basic products and goods can be found in the valley but, as a result of its location, producers have to find markets elsewhere, such as the Upper Engadine and the rest of Switzerland.

The internationally known Unesco World Heritage Benedictin Convent of St John at Müstair is one of the region's jewels. Amongst other treasures well worth visiting you will find the last large hand-weaving factory in Switzerland, countless museums, intact sites and magnificent houses with their artistically hand painted outside walls. The official language of Val Müstair is a Romansh dialect called «Jauer». Spoken daily, it is still very much alive today.
