On the eastern shores of Lake Thun, close to the Interlaken holiday resort, the St. Beatus Caves - supposedly once inhabited by a dragon - extend along the inside of the impressive Niederhorn massif.
According to legend the imposing and over million-year-old caves, which present a truly extraordinary natural wonder, served as a kind of secure hideaway for the devout St. Beatus during the 6th century. But of course only after banishing the dragon that supposedly once dwelled within to Lake Thun.
And although up until the 18th century the picturesque pilgrims’ path may have been the only way to access the renowned St. Beatus Caves, the culturally interesting destination is today conveniently reached.
