Alpine Bike
Stage 1, Scuol–Tschierv
Stunning ascent through the unspoilt Val S-charl on the eastern edge of the National Park, past the quaint hamlet of S-charl and Europe’s highest Swiss stone pine forest. Single trail through mountain pines just before the Pass da Costainas, later through larch woods, over the Lü sun terrace into Münstertal.
The first stage of the Alpine Bike route begins with a thunderbolt. Climbing through the delightful Val S-charl up to the Pass da Costainas is a classic – and with good reason. The valley is as charming as one could expect, accompanied by the constant burbling of the crystal-clear Clemgia creek.
Narrow at first, the path widens on its way into the car-free village of S-charl, a former miners’ settlement. Above the hamlet lies «God da Tamangur», Europe’s highest enclosed Swiss stone pine forest. Shortly before the pass, the route follows a trail into a sea of mountain pines.
The downhill run to Val Müstair on a gravel road later on, always in view of the snow-covered Ortler mountain, is easy and pleasant. Following the signposted trail, we pass through the sunny mountain village of Lü at 1,935 meters above sea level. Lü means «light», but the nights are pitch-dark here, making the village very popular among stargazers. A small gravel path then leads quickly to Tschierv, the day’s destination.
