La Courtine Bike
Montfaucon (Pré Petitjean)–Montfaucon (Pré Petitjean)
Easy route starting at the train station of Montfaucon (Le Pré-Petitjean), leading through the lovely typical landscapes and nature scenery of the Franches Montagnes.
After a short while, the little pond of Plain de Saigne appears, as it seems, right out of a fairytale, inviting to take a peaceful rest. After the restaurant of La Combe, the path through the typical wooded pastures starts to be more strenuous. It passes through Lajoux on to Les Genevez. These two villages, together with Fornet and Bellelay, form a region called La Courtine.
The oldest farmhouse of the Jura is found in Les Genevez. It was built in the 16th century and is now a farming museum. Recent analyses showed that the building was constructed with wood felled in 1514. The Jurassic farming museum of Les Genevez gives an insight into the life of two families of farmers in centuries past: how they were living, but also how they were farming their land in former times.
The path then goes on through small hamlets and passes by more of the typical farmhouses, huge pine trees, and pastures with horses grazing. Here the riding is easy with practically no differences in altitude. After Les Montbovats you get back to the starting point. In Le Pré-Petitjean, there is a steam train at the Dépôt de la Traction. Why not stop by and have a look, there might be some volunteers working on it.
