Franches-Montagnes Tour

Nowhere is the Jura region more typical than in the Franches Montagnes near Saignelégier. And the mountain bike route of the same name runs right through the middle of the hilly mosaic of forests, peatland wilderness areas, green meadows with horses and countless dry stone walls.
There are no actual highlights on the route through the Franches Montagnes, or Freiberg mountains, but the tour as a whole is a highlight. This is evident already on the first section to Les Breuleux. The route runs on a mix of country roads, dirt roads and single trails through a wonderful rolling landscape with scattered small lakes. It could easily be the set of a Hollywood or Bollywood movie. The route could go on like this endlessly – and it does. It meanders through small wooded areas, connects remote farms and continues along many horse pastures. There is a reason for this: The Freiberg horses are the last native Swiss breed and the source of much pride in these parts. You will see more horses than cows on the pastures around here.

Before you start heading back to Saignelégier from Les Bois, take a side trip south of Les Breuleux on the Jura Bike route to Mont Soleil, located to the south, with its countless wind turbines. It is a memorable experience to stand directly below one of these. At the same time, the view from here of the Chasseral on the other side and the Franches Montagnes is quite spectacular.

The way from Le Bois back to Saignelégier is just as interesting as getting there. The mix of country roads, dirt roads and single trails now even offers the best views, especially from the Sommêtres ridge near Le Noirmont.

Hints

Tours with an e-mountain bike
The tourism organisations had these routes registered specifically as e-mountain bike routes. Technically, they are not too difficult, no passages where the bike has to be carried, short sections where it needs to be pushed, and doable with one battery charge (max. 1000 -1200 m altitude difference). Details about e-mountain biking are available at
www.juratourisme.ch
Mountainbiking in swiss parks
The Freiberge hills around Saingnelégier offer Jura landscapes like in a picture book. The idyllic Gruère lake and the border river Doubs are part of the natural resources in the nature park.
