Alta Verzasca Bike
Brione Verzasca–Sonogno
The upper Verzasca Valley is an almost forgotten corner of Switzerland, but the Ticino couldn’t be more authentic than it is here. The mountain bike is a good choice to explore this remote region.
The tour starts in the picturesque village of Brione with its historic stone houses. Ideally, you would hop on a postbus with a bicycle carrier to get here. This way, the tour can be extended with the downhill ride through the entire Verzasca Valley back to Locarno.
The Alta Verzasca route rolls up and down all the way to Sonogno. The small village, surrounded by steep mountainsides in all directions, is a scarcely known gem in Switzerland, just like the mountain bike route between the two villages. At first glance, it doesn’t look too remarkable, but with a mix of single trails and gravel roads, it offers a lot of variety. It crosses the Verzasca river with its clear, blue-green water several times. The tour is especially attractive in mid-summer when you can take a dip in the river to cool down. The tour is also perfect for a picnic at one of the many lovely places along the Verzasca river.
The route between Brione and Sonogno is the same in both directions. A small mountain road through the valley takes you back to Locarno.
