Chällerflüe Bike

Impressive all-mountain tour in the middle of the rock arena of Leukerbad. The trail climbs up to the "Chäller" along the right flank of the Dala valley. The superb view of the Rhone valley makes you forget the short pushing passage. A top-class single trail winds its way down some 1100 metres in altitude all the way to the winegrowers‘ village of Varen.
The thermal spa resort of Leukerbad in Valais is situated in a side valley at the foot of the Gemmi pass. This tour heads in the opposite direction past the sports arena and continues on single trails and field paths to Birchen, where a forest road gently climbs up to Alp Larschi. The open field path ends at the entrance to the rock face crossing at Chällerflüe. From here, the bike has to be pushed uphill for a good 350 metres on the steep but pleasantly wide path. The rock passage is secured by a cable rope. A horizontal traverse and a final ascent lead to Pfarschong/Chäller.

A splendid view of the Rhone valley rewards the previous exertions. From now on, it's all downhill: on fabulous single trails across open pastures, then through the Varnerwald forest in a fun, flowy way to Varen. After the first third of the way, the trail is easier and open throughout. Higher speeds are now possible, so a good speed control is important. Shortly before reaching Taschunieru, the trail is again a bit more demanding. Loose stones and short, but easily rollable rock passages force you to slow down. From Varen, you reach the finish of the tour in Leuk on wide country paths and at the end on the Veloland route no. 72.

In the district capital, it is worth making a short stop and visiting the historic town with its castle. Boasting an impressive glass dome designed by the renowned Ticino architect Mario Botta, it towers on a hill above the valley. As the evening approaches, you can treat yourself to an aperitif with a view of the Pfynwald forest and the sunset. The short descent on side roads to the Susten train station will be just a breeze.
