Torrenttrail Bike
Leukerbad, Rinderhütte–Leuk
One of the country’s best single trails: always flowing but never too steep, it hugs the south side of the Torrenthorn from the Rinderhütte to Feselalp. It’s worth interrupting the flow from time to time: The view of almost all the 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps is fantastic. The tour continues over alpine pastures and settlements and ends in Leuk.
A cable car takes you from Leukerbad to the Rinderhütte in a relaxed manner - those with stamina can of course climb up under their own steam. To do so, you take the road up to Torrentalp and continue to the Rinderhütte. The fun begins just below the mountain station. The single trail always hugs the south walls of Torrenthorn. It is never steep and always effortless to ride. It is like a textbook example of a smoothly flowing single trail. As much fun as it is, an occasional stop is necessary to be able to savour the views. Most of the 4000-meter peaks of the Valais, from Mont Blanc to Weissmies, are lined up on the opposite side of the valley.
The Torrent Trail doesn’t seem to end, it runs only a short distance on a small road near Alp Oberu, and then the next adventure begins heading for Bachalp. This is a good place for a brief stop near the uppermost alpine huts where fresh cheese and homemade cakes are typically served. No pain, no gain: a bit of uphill is still needed. On a gravel road you climb up to Niwenalp and take the next single trail to Feselalp.
On an elevated traverse you arrive just above Jeizinen and continue on a restructured single trail section via z'Opmisch Hubel and along the edge of the forest to Brentschen. Through coniferous forests and a short passage on the road you reach Feschel with its historic village centre of national importance. It is situated on a lovely sunny terrace with views over the Rhone valley. Passing an idyllic lake and the hamlet of Guttet, you will soon spot the huge, round parabolic mirrors of the Brentjong satellite radio station above Leuk. The tour ends in the district capital. A short stop in the historic town with its castle is worthwhile. Boasting an impressive glass dome designed by the renowned Ticino architect Mario Botta, it towers on a hill above the valley. The train station of Susten is not far away, and from there you can take the bus back to the starting point in Leukerbad.

Consideration
Area with livestock guardian dogs: On the mountain pasture Niwen you may encounter on the bike trail livestock guardian dogs at the beginning of June and in September. Guardian dogs and sheeps are separated from the trail with a fence. Respecting certain rules helps avoid problems.
The lower trail from the Niwenalp to Stafel is fenced off, so you don`t have direct contact to guardian dogs. The upper, parallel running trail via Nibubedu crosses the protected sheep during June and September.
