Torrenttrail Bike

This is one of the country’s best single trails: always flowing but never too steep, it hugs the south side of the Torrenthorn from the Rinderhütte to Jeizinen. But it’s worth interrupting the flow from time to time, because the view of almost all the 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps is simply fantastic.
It makes sense to take the gondola from Leukerbad up to the Rinderhütte mountain inn, but you could do it with your bike, of course. To do so, you take the road up to Torrentalp and continue to the Rinderhütte. The fun begins just below the mountain station. The single trail always hugs the south walls of Torrenthorn. It is never steep and always effortless to ride. It is like a textbook example of a smoothly flowing single trail. As much fun as it is, an occasional stop is necessary to be able to savour the views. Most of the 4000-meter peaks of the Valais, from Mont Blanc to Weissmies, are lined up on the opposite side of the valley.

The Torrent Trail doesn’t seem to end, it runs only a short distance on a small road near Alp Oberu, and then the next adventure begins heading for Bachalp. This is a good place for a brief stop near the uppermost alpine huts where fresh cheese and homemade cakes are typically served.

No pain, no gain: a bit of uphill is still needed. On a gravel road you climb up to Niwenalp and take the next single trail to Feselalp. This is where the fun with single trails ends. On an asphalt road you descend to Jeizinen and keep going, always on asphalt, via Engersch, Feschel and Albinen back to Leukerbad. This alternative has 20 kilometres of asphalt roads to get to Leukerbad.

Consideration
Area with livestock guardian dogs: On the mountain pasture Niwen you may encounter on the bike trail livestock guardian dogs at the beginning of June and in September. Guardian dogs and sheeps are separated from the trail with a fence. Respecting certain rules helps avoid problems.
The lower trail from the Niwenalp to Stafel is fenced off, so you don`t have direct contact to guardian dogs. The upper, parallel running trail via Nibubedu crosses the protected sheep during June and September.
