Lugano Bike
Stage 1, Lugano (Monte Brè)–Pairolo
Amid nature but close to town: wooded single trails lead from Monte Brè to Sonvico with a view of Lugano and the lake. Then the route truly begins, covering a distance in altitude of about 800 metres on an unpaved road to the Capanna Pairolo. Your reward: a magnificent view of Lugano’s back country.
Actually, it would be possible to get up to Monte Brè high above Lugano under your own steam. But by taking the funicular you save the strength you later need on the way to Capanna Pairolo.
On Monte Brè you first breathe in the fantastic views of Lugano and the intricate lake, before you take the single trails and plunge into the dense forest. A smooth ridge path followed by a fun downhill run takes you deep into the hinterland of Lugano with its scattered settlements.
The fun is over near Sonvico where the steep ascent to Capanna Pairolo begins. A mix of gravel paths and trails high above Val Colla climbs uphill. Halfway up, the trail gets steeper, there are more turns and finally, some 800 meters in altitude later, you reach a small rise, very close to the Pairolo Hut – a perfect place to end the first leg of the route. The views from the spartan hut across the hinterland of Lugano are beautiful, but above all, it is very comfortable and the food is excellent.
