Jura Bike

Once again, the Doubs dominates the first half of this stage. The stretch along the river runs through a wonderfully remote region, before a long ascent to the Franches Montagnes plateau takes you back to civilization. Dry stone walling, isolated farmsteads and grazing horses accompany you to Saignelégier.
Always following the banks of the Doubs river, this stage begins far from civilization. The Doubs has carved its way deep into the countryside, but then, the trail finally begins to rise. Instead of branching off back to the river bank, the route now climbs high up to the plateau of the Franches Montagnes. The area is known for its dry stone walls, remote farmhouses and the native horses of the region.

The route continues just as one would picture. The Jura region could not be more typical. The path keeps going, sometimes on trails, sometimes on gravel or short distances on small roads, all the way to Saignelégier.

The capital of the Franches-Montagnes district of Jura still shows signs of the long-past heyday of watchmaking, and large buildings bear witness to the industrialization of that time. To this day, the Maurice Lacroix watch company is a major employer in Saignelégier. Another flagship product is Tête de Moine AOC cheese, produced in a local dairy.
