Triesenberg (FL)

The village of Triesenberg in the Principality of Liechtenstein lies at 900 m above sea level with overwhelming views over the Rhine Valley to the Alps of Eastern Switzerland. With an extensive network of hiking trails, its Alpine area is a hiker’s paradise.
Triesenberg is a popular recreational region, in area the largest and in altitude the highest municipality in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Located on a sunny slope, Triesenberg stretches from 700 to 2000 metres above sea level. Its special features are its various municipal areas. The higher region of Rizlina, Gnalp, Silum, Masescha and Gaflei offer an invitation to stroll and relax in peace and seclusion. Lying behind the «Kulm» mountain chain are the recreational and winter-sport regions of Malbun and Steg.

Migrating Walsers fashioned these settlements around 1280. Local people still speak a well-preserved Walser dialect. An interesting overview of the ancestry of the Triesenberger people can be found at the village centre: The modern Walser Folk Museum displays a sizeable local history collection on Walser cultural history and a multi-vision show on the life of the Walsers and the history of Triesenberg.

The parish church of St. Joseph stands in Triesenberg village centre along with the former rectory and today’s town hall, the landmark of the municipality. Its special feature is the onion spire which is unique in Liechtenstein. The idyllic mountain chapels at Masescha, in Maiensäss Steg and in Malbun are evidence of the importance of religion to the Walser folk.

Summer

The Walser Museum is also the start of the Walser-Sagenweg (fables trail), which illustrates the cultural landscape, history fables and legends of the Walser. Strolls and hikes in the Alpine region and mountains provide energy and vitality for everyday routine. The scenic diversity and views to the valley and beyond never fail to fascinate.

Winter

The winter sport areas of Steg and Malbun belong to Triesenberg Municipality. Malbun has also made a name for itself as an attractive, snow-sure and family friendly winter-sports resort. The 15-km-long cross-country runs into the idyllic Valünatal start at Maiensäss Steg. And sledging fans can spend enjoyable hours on the Sücka-Steg natural sledge runs in scenic surroundings.

Highlights

  • Walser Folklore Museum in Triesenberg – the local history collection offers a living insight into the life and history of the Walser community.
  • Ski Museum in Malbun - over 100 years of skiing history presented by former Liechtenstein ski ace Noldi Beck.
  • Vaduz – distances are short in little «Ländle». Good reason to travel from Triesenberg to «Städtle» to enjoy its cultural attractions.
