Chiasso

Chiasso is mainly familiar to railway passengers travelling to and from Italy: the frontier station means an intermediate stop for most trains. The border town close to the Comersee in Italy is also the starting point for the natural paradise of Valle Muggio.
Chiasso in Sottoceneri (meaning south of Monte Ceneri) is located close to the Po Valley in Mendrisiotto, between the lakes of Lago di Lugano and Lago di Como on the border to Italy. The southernmost tip of Switzerland is in Pedrinate, also belonging to Chiasso. Roman altars have been found here. Chiasso is a frontier railway station and also an important marshalling yard for freight traffic to the south. The railway has also made a vital contribution to the economic development of the town.

The m.a.x.-Museo, dedicated to the work of Swiss graphic artist Max Huber, was opened in Chiasso in 2005. Neighbouring Balerna offers the Chicco d'Oro Coffee Museum: historic collectors’ pieces illustrate how preparation of the drink has changed over time. Coffee has conquered the world since its discovery by Abyssinian monks in around the 8th century and museum visitors can trace this development.

Chiasso is the starting point for a postbus trip or bike tour into the Valle Muggio, a pre-Alpine valley remaining almost as nature intended, in marked contrast to urban, industrialized Chiasso. The Breggia Gorge Park in Muggiotal offers a rich diversity of natural habitats to admire in an area of around 160 acres and over 1.5 km in length: rapids, waterfalls, various types of stone and many protected species of flora and fauna. Grotti – traditional small taverns – provide welcome refreshment.

Highlights

  • Valle Muggio – unspoiled pre-Alpine valley. Wide variety of flora, fauna and rocks to be admired in the Breggia Gorge Park.
  • Foxtown in nearby Mendrisio – large factory outlet store with brand name products at factory prices, a paradise for shopping fans.
  • Comersee – the lake and the town of Como are just across the Italian border.
