St. Antönien
St. Antönien at the foot of the Rätikon chain is a stage stop on the Prättigauer Höhenweg (high-level path). The panoramic but demanding mountain hike through untamed, flower-filled surroundings justifies a relaxing stop in a tiny Prättigau mountain village.
St. Antönien (1420m) and nearby Partnun are starting points for uphill hikes to the Carschina Hut, Schesaplana Hut or the Austrian Tilisuna Hut on the other side of the Rätikon ridge. An 85km-long network of hiking trails around St. Antönien offers a range of easy to medium difficulty tours. The mountains are similar to the Dolomites. The rock has a good gripping surface and favourable conditions for climbers.
The carefully arranged local museum tells the history of the tiny scattered Walser settlement of St. Antönien and of winter and hiking tourism of earlier days. Also well worth a visit is the Berghaus Sulzfluh in Partnun, with quirky Alpine attractions e.g. an open-air, wood-heated whirlpool and a historic open-air skittle alley. And it’s not far from here to the tiny Partnun mountain lake or the Sulzfluh caves. The circular Alpine natural-history path in Partnun is also fascinating.
The Prättigauer scooters are also no everyday mountain experience: stand on and off you roll... e.g. from St. Antönien via Pany and Luzein to Küblis (14km, 640m altitude difference) or via Pany to Schiers (20km, 700m altitude difference).
In winter, the area around St. Antönien offers attractive ski tours. Both beginners and experienced skiers will find suitable ascents and superb descents. St. Antönien also has sledge and ski runs, a skilift and a children’s skilift with ski school. And winter walking to Partnun, Gafien, Aschüel or Ascharina has a charm all of its own.
