Soglio

The artist Giovanni Segantini called Soglio «the threshold to paradise». This old and picturesque village lies on a sunny terrace situation with breathtaking views of the Grisons Bregaglia Valley and its sweet chestnut plantations.
The road from the Upper Engadine Valley to Lake Como in Italy and Canton Ticino leads over the Maloja Pass and through the Val Bregaglia. This southern Graubunden valley is an enchanting blend of nature, history and culture. The small village of Soglio is situated close to the Swiss-Italian border at an altitude of 1088 metres on a south-facing, sunny terrace overlooking the valley. Sweet chestnut trees cover the mountain slope below the village. The chestnuts are harvested in autumn and kiln-dried in «Cascine», from which the characteristic blue-tinged smoke wafts up between the large trees with their red-gold foliage. Modest, quarry stone-built farmhouses huddling tightly together are interspersed by the Campanile (freestanding bell tower) of the village church and impressive stately mansions or palazzi built in previous centuries by the Salis-Soglio family, who made their fortune with mercenary soldiering. Cà Aelta, Casa Antonio, Casa Gubert, Palazzo Max and Casa Battista were built by the family throughout generations.

The Casa Battista, built by Baptista von Salis in 1630, is now a hotel; the Hotel Palazzo Salis. Its grounds include a baroque rose garden and dappled shade from giant sequoias. The peaks of the «Val Bregaglia Denti», (teeth) rise up from the horizon against a backdrop of the blue Grisons sky. The Hotel Palazzo Salis won the «Historic Hotel of the Year» award in 1998 and offers its guests a unique stay in the carefully renovated apartments of the noble Salis family.

More information on the history of the Bregaglia Valley can be found at the Palazzo Castelmur in Stampa, built in Moorish-Gothic style. It houses an exhibition on the lives of the valley’s emigrants to foreign lands.
