Rossens FR

The peaceful village lying between the two rivers Glâne and Saane has experienced an impressive economic change that still visibly shapes its character.
Rossens lies on a rise of sedimentary rock between the rivers Glâne and Saane. The village was first documented under its present name in 1162. At that time it was under the rule of today's neighbouring village Pont-la-Ville until it was sold to Fribourg in 1482.

For centuries the village of Rossens was shaped by its agriculture. An economic boom took place in local small businesses when the Rossens dam was built between 1944 and 1948. Larger companies in the electrical branch and watchmaking industry became the most important employers in the region. Between 1970 and 2000 the population increased by almost 200%.

The direct link to the nearby cantonal capital by train and motorway and the development of an industrial zone were probably jointly responsible for the village's economic reversal. In 2005, well over 50% of jobs in the village were in the industrial sector.

Highlights

  • Ruine Illens – the ruins of the 13th-century castle stand several kilometres upstream, on a rock spur in the middle of the River Saane.
  • Pont-la-Ville golf course – golf can be played on an 18-hole golf course in Pont (3 km from Rossens).
