Murg

A stroll through a chestnut forest is not only possible in the Ticino but also in Murg on the Walensee lake. Figs and grapes also flourish in the damp, mild climate. The out-of-the-way Murgtal valley with its three little lakes is a scenic gem.
Murg, on the southern shores of the Walensee lake, lies on a sizeable delta formed in the lake by the Murgbach river. It belongs to the municipality of Quarten. This is mainly known thanks to tourism and parts of the nearby Flumserberg skiing and hiking region also belong to Quarten.

Murg is known for its unusual incidence of sweet chestnut trees. The mild, damp and warm Walensee climate (warmth from the lake and the Föhn wind) and acidic soil foster the growth of these trees, not usually found north of the Alps. The third largest occurrence of chestnut trees in Switzerland is found here after the Ticino and Bergell! A theme trail provides information on this special feature. Figs and grapes also grow in Murg.

A wonderful hike leads from Murg high up through the chestnut forest and on through the remote Murgtal valley to the three Murgsee lakes at over 1800 m altitude. Murgtal is not only a scenic gem but also splendid in a botanical and geological sense and is on the list of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance which are worthy of preservation. A mountain guesthouse with tourist dormitory is located at the Murgsee lakes.

The Walensee is well-known for its regular, thermal winds. A sailing school with boat hire and a windsurfing school are also located here. The scheduled boats on the lake operate throughout the year, but in winter are limited to the link between Murg and remote Quinten. Special cruises, such as brunch, pasta or barbecue boats supplement the usual timetable.

Highlights

  • Murgtal and Murgseen – a long, totally near-to-nature valley, stretching from Murg on Walensee lake to three little mountain lakes.
  • Walensee – the pleasures of swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing, diving, kayaking and sailing, plus scheduled passenger boats.
  • GeoPark Sargans Region-Walensee-Glarus Region – experience mining and geology at close quarters, wide range of offers for excursions and guided tours in the region (e.g. Gonzen mines).
  • Flumserberg – the family-friendly holiday destination and Eastern Switzerland’s largest winter-sport region lies on the southern shores of Walensee, with views of the distinctive Churfirsten mountain chain.
