Münsingen

Münsingen in the Aaretal, on the east bank of the river, halfway between Thun and Bern. The one-time farming village has long become a multifaceted and modern place to live and now has 11'000 inhabitants.
With its position on the Aare plain, on one side the Emmental, on the other the Gürbetal and Gantrisch region, Münsingen is predestined to be the start, finish or stage stop for cycling and hiking tours. The flat, around six-hour hike along the banks of the Aare from Thun to Bern is very popular. On hot summer days, hundreds of rubber boats and their passengers choose to follow the same route. Also on the Aare is the popular Münsingen Parkbad (lido).

The Restaurant «Wynhus zum Bären», probably Canton Bern’s oldest tavern, serves delicious food, with a little luck at the very table where part of Jeremias Gotthelf’s «Anne Bäbi Jowäger» was filmed.

The water wheel of the «Alten Öle» im Mühletal started turning again in 1991. In the restored 300-year-old oil mill, visitors are shown how oil was pressed in earlier times - or how bones were crushed as a sideline. The «Museum im Schloss» is dedicated to the Bernese patrician family, the von Steigers, and puppeteer Therese Keller.

The figurehead of Münsingen’s flourishing industrial sector is USM, world-famous producer of office furniture. Münsingen is also known for its large psychiatric institution, where amongst others, author Fredrich Glauser was admitted several times. From here it’s 10 minutes along the Aare to the nationally acclaimed concert and cultural locale, the «Mühle Hunziken» in Rubigen.

Highlights

  • Wynhus zum Bären in Münsingen - probably the oldest tavern in the canton with evidence pointing to 1371.
  • Münsinger Parkbad on the Aare - popular for its shady trees and the chance to swim in the Aare.
