Moléson-sur-Gruyères

The holiday resort of Moléson-sur-Gruyères is the starting point of the ascent to the peak of the same name in Canton Fribourg. The world famous Gruyère AOC cheese is made twice-daily in the traditional way over a log fire at the show dairy in the village.
This village nestled into the flank of the Moléson, a landmark peak of pre-Alpine Canton Fribourg, is a holiday and excursion destination with many attractions. Family-focused summer activities include botany, cheese-making and astronomy circuit paths, a summer sledge run, carts, scooters and crazy-golf facilities.

A 4 kilometre-long forestry theme trail on the subject of sustainable forestry and agriculture leads through the woods surrounding Moléson village. It can be hiked in around 1 1/2 hours with additional time necessary for stops.

The Pays de Gruyère with its lush vegetation and hilly topography is where the world famous Gruyère AOC cheese is made. Visitors to the demonstration dairy in a typical alpine hut dating from 1686 close to Moléson village can watch a twice-daily cheese-making demonstration. The cheese is made the traditional way, over a log fire.

The Moléson peak (2002m) can be reached by funicular and cableway from Moléson village. Climbers with a head for heights can disembark at the middle station at Plan-Francey (1517m) and use the fixed-rope route through the north-west face to the northern peak. The Moléson Massif is a popular hiking area and ski region. The restaurant at the summit has a public astronomy observatory with four telescopes. By day, views from the summit take in Alps, the area around Lake Geneva, Jura Mountains, the Mittelland and the Bernese Alps. At night, stargazers can observe stars and galaxies at the observatory (dormitory accommodation).

Moléson is the most important ski region in Canton Fribourg. 35 kilometres of pistes have downhill runs in varying degrees of difficulty. The funicular that runs from Moléson village to the Plan-Francey middle terminus allows access to several snowshoe trails and a 4 km-long sledge run.
