Miglieglia

The typical Ticino mountain village of Miglieglia nestles on a sunny terrace in central Malcantone. Departure point of the aerial cableway up Monte Lema, the scenic landmark of Malcantone on the Italian border.
From Miglieglia, the aerial cableway takes just 10 minutes to reach the summit of Monte Lema (1624 m). A unique panoramic view of Southern Ticino opens out across Lago di Lugano, the Luino valleys and the Lago Maggiore. Views sweep across to the Valais peaks, the Po Valley and Milan. The summit restaurant with its beautiful terrace also offers accommodation. Monte Lema is a popular departure point for hikes, with 80 km of marked trails e.g. the high-level Monte Lema - Monte Tamaro route with breathtaking panoramic views in all directions. Mountain bikers love the racy downhill runs and paraglider/hang-glider pilots love the excellent thermals.

The «Strada verde del Malcantone» is a delightful trail snaking through central and upper Malcantone. The entire route can be covered in three one-day stages. The «Grüne Strasse» (green road) leads along the slopes, touching characteristic places of interest and villages of Malcantone such as the Santo Stefano Church with its romantic tower and commanding position above the village of Miglieglia, the hammer mill at Aranno and the tranquil little lake of Astano etc.

The chestnut tree was once the «bread & butter tree» for the inhabitants of the Ticino valley. The sweet chestnuts provided food for at least six months of the year. Stout, gnarled chestnut trees, their bases in a yellow-brown carpet of ferns, transform the mountain valleys into a parkland landscape. The six-hour Kastanienweg (Chestnut Trail) through Alto Malcantone gives an insight into the diversity and care of native chestnut tree varieties.

Along the «Sentiero delle Meraviglie» (Path of Wonders) you are a witness to times past – from deserted gold mines, brickworks, old mills and castle ruins to a hammer mill. The hammer mill between Miglieglia and Aranno on the banks of the River Magliasina offers the opportunity to linger a little, to visit the mill or take a refreshing dip in the river basin.

Another theme trail: the Sonnenparcours (Sun Trail) offers the chance to discover Malcantone’s most beautiful and interesting sun dials. The trail to some 30 different sun dials leads from Arosio to Bioggio and also passes Miglieglia.
