Blatten (Belalp)

Blatten (Belalp)

Blatten is an idyllic Valais resort offering a plethora of activities amidst a spectacular setting and easy access to the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Belalp is a popular winter sports resort.
Typical stone-roofed timber houses with façades burnt almost black by the sun and their adjacent raised storehouses characterise the village of Blatten. This is the starting point of hiking trails through the Aletsch Forest with its 800 to 1000-year-old stone pines at the highest elevation in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage with the Aletsch Glacier at its centre. With an ice layer 900 metres thick, the glacier is Europe’s longest with a total length of 23 kilometres. A hike around the glacier is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A flora and fauna theme trail at Belalp can be explored individually or with a guide. The sculpture theme path offers an interesting fusion of culture and nature, with sculptures on the subject of «Freedom» bordering the path at intervals. They make a particularly striking impression against the stunning backdrop of the glacial landscape.

Thrill-seekers can take a guided canyoning tour of the Massa Gorge, which was carved out of the granite rock face millennia ago by the melt water of the Aletsch Glacier.

The advent of tourism in the 19th century brought mountaineers and tourists to Belalp. The Belalp Guesthouse was built at an altitude of 2130 metres on the Aletschbord, and many of the era’s dignitaries stayed there, such as Red Cross founder Henri Dunant, British Prime Minister Lord Asquith and mountaineer Winthrop Young. The construction of the funicular in 1954 and the area’s first ski lift in 1963 brought modern tourism to the region without compromising heritage and authenticity.
