Medeglia

Medeglia lies isolated in the tiny valley of Isone, south of Monte Ceneri. The valley winds to the east. The surrounding area is a diverse hiking region with small moors and lovely vantage points.
The pass near the tiny Gola di Lago flat moor leads south from Medeglia into Val Capriasca and towards Tesserete. The moorland is around the size of four football fields. Its peat bogs are under a protection order and classed as moorland of national importance. Refreshment is available on the alp and makes a pleasant way to break the hike.

Another moorland area is found on the other side of the valley, in a wide depression at Monti di Medeglia on the ascent to Cima di Medeglia. The route leads past numerous more or less well-developed rustici. The 1260m summit offers a stunning 360° panorama despite its relatively low altitude. The descent to Monte Ceneri is also possible from here.

The valley is reached by postbus, which takes 20 minutes to reach Medeglia from the Rivera-Bironico station and then continues to Isone. Isone is primarily known as the site of the Swiss Army Infantry Training School.

Medeglia has a few houses and barns bearing folkloric frescoes from the beginning of the 19th century. The wooden balconies from the 18/19th centuries are also worth seeing. The San Bartolomeo Church is of Romanesque origin but has been rebuilt many times over the centuries. In contrast, the bell tower has retained its late-Romanesque character.

Highlights

  • Cima di Medeglia – vantage mountain (1260 m) east of Monte Ceneri with impressive 360° panorama.
  • Tiny areas of moorland - at Medeglia, high up on the slopes on both sides of the Isone Valley (Gola di Lago and Monti di Medeglia).
