Alp Grüm

Off the road, to the south of the summit of the Berninapass, lies Alp Grüm, 2091m, the tiny station of the Rhaetian Railway. Wonderful views of the Palü Glacier, the tiny Palü See (lake) and Puschlav, the southern-most valley of Graubunden.
Were it not for the modern panorama carriages of the Bernina Express, you could imagine you were back in bygone days. Also highly unusual: no vehicles can drive as far as the ornate station building made of natural stone and the adjoining buffet/hotel with views of the Palü Glacier.

The RhB station of Alp Grüm (2091m) is on the Bernina line from Pontresina to Poschiavo and Tirano. The train has hardly begun to move into the valley before it turns a photogenic half-circle and winds down through narrow bends and spiral tunnels into Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo, with its touch of southern ambience.

On Alp Grüm and in nearby Cavaglia on the valley floor, simple, cosy guest houses serve Puschlav specialities, Engadine delicacies and Veltlin wine. By day, rewarding short detours lead to the Cavaglia glacier mills, Val da Camp nature reserve and the Sassal Masone vantage point with the tiny church of San Romerio in its stunning setting.

Alp Grüm and also Cavaglia are primarily stage stops on the much travelled Puschlav panorama path from the Berninapass to Poschiavo. In the first section, the path runs along the railway track. The section from Alp Grüm to Poschiavo has plenty of surprises in store, with many views into Val Poschiavo.

The Puschlav panorama path is part of the Via Valtellina, the long, culturally-historic hiking trail leading from Schruns (A) via Davos and Pontresina into Puschlav and on to Tirano) in Veltlin (I).

Highlights

  • Alp Grüm station - pure railway romance: the tiny station built of natural stone with its adjoining hotel/restaurant has absolutely nothing in common with the impersonal character of modern railway stations.
  • Panorama Path - from the Bernina Hospiz, a level path leads alongside the Lago Bianco to Alp Grüm, before zigzagging down to Cavaglia and running on as a high-level path to Poschiavo. Lovely views into Puschlav.
  • Lago Nero and Lago Bianco - only a few metres separate these two mountain lakes on the Berninapass. But one body of water flows to north to the Black Sea via the Inn and Donau (Danube) while the other flows south to the Adriatic via the Adda and Po.
  • Cavaglia Glacier Garden - below Alp Grüm, almost 10m deep glacier mills give an insight into the earth’s history, going back some 20 to 30,000 years.
