Ospizio Bernina

The Bernina-Hospiz lies at a majestic 2310 m altitude in the midst of an Alpine mountain and glacier world, on the pass between the Engadin and Puschlav.
For centuries, the hospiz on the lofty Passo del Bernina, served as a resting place and transhipment point for traders on the busy north-south trade route between the mild Veltlin and the raw north.

Today’s massive Bernina-Hospiz building was constructed at the end of the 19th century. All that remains of the days of mule trains are the bitterly cold winters, mild, fragrant summer days, sun-flooded Engadin light, wide, sweeping views of the impressive mountain world and two glistening lakes at the pass head: the dark, Lej Nair flowing north towards the River Inn, and the milky Lago Bianco, part of the catchment area of the Po. The Passo del Bernina is not only the European watershed between the Black Sea and Adriatic Sea but also the boundary between the Romansh- and Italian-speaking areas.

The post coaches have long been replaced by one of the world’s most spectacular and famous railway stretches. The Bernina stretch is the highest-altitude railway transversal in the Alps and with a 7% gradient, also the world’s steepest adhesion railway. Together with the Albula section, it is considered to be the most beautiful Alpine crossing and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2008.

Highlights

  • Bernina railway section: a masterpiece of railway technology in a breathtaking mountain world. The highest-altitude Alpine railway transversal and the world’s steepest narrow-gauge section of railway (7% gradient) and part of a UNESCO World Heritage.
  • Ökostrompfad (eco-power trail): The theme trail in the impressive mountain landscape between Passo del Bernina and Cavaglia, provides fascinating facts on environmentally friendly power production, geology, the Bernina railway section and much more.
